We had a treat today at the farm!
The Open Hearth Cook visited us--all the way from Pennsylvania!
John and I have known--and loved--this lady ever since we took the open hearth cooking class in her home back in May 2004. From the beginning, we found a special friendship with Mercy and Ed. In fact, she became our "Mama Mercy" when she sent us a certificate of adoption after our visit with her. Since then, we've kept in touch by email and snail mail. It's always a treat to hear from her.
Mercy and Ed visited us back in 2006, when we had just started renovation on the farm buildings. They were so surprised and pleased with the progress we have made since then. I only wish they could have stayed longer. . .
Mercy lives in a circa 1750 colonial home in Humeville, PA, where she teaches her 18th century cooking classes in a 41/2 foot stone fireplace. She also visits museums and schools, demonstrating her cooking skills. Their visit with us today was on their route to the ALFHAM annual meeting being held in Texas, where she will conduct a workshop. She also holds an office on the foodways committee in ALFHAM.
Mercy has been published in many magazines and periodicals, including a series she did on seasonal cooking for Early American Life magazine in 2011. She is co-author of Colonial Burlington Cookery based on a small book of receipts (recipes) by a young Quaker woman in 1770 named Polly Burling. She has also made two DVD's--Open Hearth Cooking with Mercy Ingraham and Partridges Prepared Two Ways.
Well, I could just go on and on--but, the focus today was in our reuniting with loved ones and how it just fills my heart with joy to have had Mama Mercy--and Ed--visit with us on their way to Texas.

And, Mercy--well, she seemed to be a proud "Mama."
I know her "kids" are proud of her!

What a neat post about a special friendship, and what an interesting life Mercy has. I'm going to follow your links to learn more about her. I loved reading about your visit and loved seeing all the pictures...good job!
